Stelia buys Bombardier’s A220 activities
Stelia buys Bombardier A220 sub assembly
Bombardier, Airbus and Stelia have reached an agreement regarding Bombardier’s manufacturing activities on the A220 and the A330. The agreement covers the manufacturing of the cockpit, the bulkhead and the AFT fuse of the A220. It also include some structural element being done by Bombardier on the A330. All of these activities are currently carried out at the Bombardier plant in Ville St-Laurent (formerly Canadair or Plan 1). Airbus will pay the sum of 591 M$ to Bombardier for this acquisition and for its share in the A220 program.
This transaction makes sense for Stelia, which manufactures the flight decks for all Airbus civil aircraft. In addition, Stelia’s Mirabel executives were responsible for developing the company’s North American operations. It is to be expected that the new buyer will invest in order to make the production of the work package just acquired profitable. The company already has the land necessary for its expansion in Mirabel. This is a very good transaction for the Montreal aerospace cluster, because the jobs remain here.
For Bombardier, this transaction completes its exit from the commercial aircraft sector. With finances revived, she will be able to focus on her business aircraft activity.
