B737MAX, more bad news

The Boeing and its B737MAX are back into the headlines and it’s still for the wrong reasons.

The German newspaper Spiegel has written three very long articles on the problems of Boeing and MAX. In the first article, lawyers say that Boeing did not comply with the regulations on aircraft certification. Boeing’s insurers may then decline to pay the benefits. It will probably be a few years before concluding whether Boeing is insurable or not. But if Boeing alone must bear the financial consequences of the MAX, its finances will be seriously affected for years.

The Wall Street Journal has published an article about a meeting between Boeing and the certification agencies. This meeting was supposed to allow Boeing to make a presentation of upcoming changes to the B737MAX. But the representatives of the agencies present would have interrupted Boeing to obtain more technical details. Given Boeing’s denial to provide all the technical information, the agencies would have ended the meeting.

This new imbroglio with the certification agencies will delay the return to service of the MAX for at least several weeks. A flight authorization before the end of 2019 is almost impossible by now.

Most surprising is that more than five months after the MAX flight ban, Boeing is still unable to provide all the information requested by the nine certification agencies that work with the FAA. We cannot say whether it was out of arrogance or incompetence that Boeing did not give the information. But in both cases, it is his reputation that takes a serious blow.

All this leads us to say that we are still far from the end of this crisis.
