A220 engines gets ETOPS 180 certification

Pratt & Whitney USA has issued a press release announcing the achievement of the ETOPS 180 standard for the PW1500G engines on the A220.

 

ETOPS stands for Extended-Range Twin Engine Operation Standard and this standard allows the use of two-engine aircraft up to a set distance in minutes of flight from any available airstrip. In the case of the ETOPS 180 for the A220, this means that it could be operated up to 180 minutes of flights away from any airport with a suitable runway where the A220 could land.

 

The aircraft it self should be certified soon. Obtaining ETOPS 180 certification means that the A220 could fly on transatlantic routes.
